Ready, set, rove. Opportunity is poised to leave its lander and begin exploring Meridiani Planum on 31 January EST.
Meanwhile, NASA engineers say Spirit's software problems on their way to being solved. The recovering rover was scheduled
to resume its geological observations on 30 January.
Sedimentary suggestion. Thin layers
on a rock outcrop just 8 meters away from Opportunity's landing site hint at a sedimentary origin. Wind or water may have carried dust and
bits of rock to Meridiani Planum, where they gradually solidified in layers.
Scientist on trial. A jury on 1 December convicted plague expert Thomas Butler on 47 of 69 counts. He could face dozens
of years in jail. Check our free blog for a count-by-count breakdown of the verdict.
